Good points This review relates to the original shape Corsa (on an X-plate). This is still a very pretty looking car, and has not dated like contemporary Fiestas. Comfort levels are good with a full complement of features including electric windows, electric PAS, heated door mirrors, central locking etc. The little 1.0 engine has a distinctive 3-cylinder hum which quietens down to virtually nothing at motorway speeds. It is a smooth, and surprisingly flexible engine for its size and is supremely reliable. This car has always started first time and never let me down – not bad when it has done an 84 mile round trip every day for the last 20 months. Fuel efficiency is good for a petrol car and the engine never uses any oil. Bad points Bad: Corsa’s blow bulbs for fun. Best to carry a spare bulb kit in the glove box at all times. They are very easy to fit but some owners may find it useful to carry a Haynes manual. Service intervals are 9,000 miles which is far too often when compared with the 18,000 mile intervals on the Renault Clio. Corsa’s are very reliable, IF you maintain them properly. Many horror stories on car review pages are down to a lack of maintenance – I have kept up a full Vauxhall dealership service history and it has really paid off. Paint work does chip easily, although this isn’t a problem if you check regularly and touch any marks up. If the paint work ever chips to bare metal, treat the chip with Hammerite Kurust first, fill the chip with a coat of primer and then touch up with the pen for your body colour. This will prevent any replays of Nova-style rust invasion. There are a couple of irritating design faults, but they are nothing major. The windscreen wiper controls are a pain because the front and rear washers are opposite to each other on the same stalk switch, meaning that you cannot have the rear wiper on and use the front washers at the same time. Other comments This is a well built car which does the job nicely. It won’t win any rally competitions but as reliable A to B transport is cheap and effective.
